Why Your Whole Family Should Be in Your Dog’s Photographs
Including the People and Dogs Who Make Your Family Complete
When people book a dog photography session, they're usually thinking about capturing beautiful portraits of their dog. And rightly so. Our dogs are such an important part of our lives. What many people don't think about is stepping in front of the camera themselves.
Often it's because someone feels awkward having their photograph taken. Sometimes it's because they think the session should be all about the dog. And if there are teenagers involved, many parents assume they'll never agree to be in the photographs anyway.
The truth is, some of the most meaningful images from any session are the ones that include the whole family.
Recently, I photographed a lovely family near Midhurst in West Sussex with their two teenage sons and their two beautiful lurchers. Their session is the perfect example of why it's worth encouraging everyone to take part.
A Relaxed Approach for the Whole Family
Photographing families with dogs is a little different to a traditional family photoshoot. It's about balancing everyone's needs without making the session feel staged or stressful.
Rather than directing every moment, I gently guide the family into beautiful light and natural locations, while also watching the dogs and waiting for those genuine interactions that can't be posed. Those little moments often become the photographs people treasure most because they tell the story of your family exactly as you are.
Your Dogs Are Part of the Family Story
For many families, dogs are involved in almost every part of life. They're there on weekend walks, family adventures and quiet evenings at home. They grow alongside children and become part of the memories you make together.
Including your dogs in a family photography session tells a much bigger story than individual portraits ever can. It's about capturing the relationships between everyone. These are often the photographs that become favourites because they reflect everyday life, exactly as it was.
Even Teenagers Can Enjoy a Photography Session
One of the biggest concerns parents mention is whether their teenagers will actually enjoy the session. The good news is they don't need to love having their photograph taken. I don't expect children or teenagers to spend an hour smiling at the camera. Instead, I create a relaxed environment where conversation comes naturally and everyone can simply enjoy spending time together.
By the end of this session, the boys had completely relaxed. Rather than feeling like a photoshoot, it felt like a family walk with the dogs. That approach always creates much more authentic photographs than asking everyone to pose perfectly.
Creating Artwork to Enjoy Every Day
One of the things I love most about my job is helping families enjoy their photographs long after the session has finished. Rather than leaving your favourite images on a phone or hard drive, I help you choose artwork that becomes part of your home and your everyday life.
After their viewing appointment, this family chose a beautiful multi-aperture wall art piece. The centre image features the whole family together, surrounded by portraits of each of their lurchers and some of their favourite moments from the session. It's a piece that tells their story, celebrates the bond they share, and can be enjoyed every single day.
Final Thoughts
If you've been thinking about booking a dog photography session, I'd encourage you to consider stepping in front of the camera too. Not because your dog needs you in the photographs. Because one day, you'll be so pleased you did.
Whether your children are young, nearly grown up, or somewhere in between, these photographs become part of your family's story. And when your dogs are part of the family, they deserve to be part of those memories too.
